    1. This is a haunting book that I read as a teenager, in the 1960s, and have never forgotten I remember it as harshly technical, metal scraping against metal, hard science at its harshest while at the same time with a sort of ferocious poetical quality that characterizes much of Boulle s writing, fictional science than science fiction really I didn t, but some readers may find it to be so realistic as to be a bit dullUntil nearing the last fourth of the book, the mood abruptly changes and both the [...]

    2. Moon Struck and Speechless Though this delightful painting of a story the story of man s marveling at the universe is a veritable delight to the reader, I can find no words that would satisfactorily describe what you will encounter in Garden on the Moon It is one of the best sci fi reads I have ever encountered I ve said before that I find Boulle s work delightfully original and inventive Here he makes a turn to face the moon And, fiction mirrors the real world I will not spoil anything The firs [...]

    3. I read Garden sometime in the early 1970 s It has remained etched in my memory ever since Even though it has to be classified as Hard SF, it is an amazing very realistic book on the developments in the space missile technology fields in the post WW II era, and is quite an authentic account of the mad race to put a man on the moon between USA the USSR in the late 1960 s How both the great powers get pipped to the post in the end forms the unforgettable and poignant denouement of this great, wonde [...]

    4. It s billed as science fiction from the writer of Planet of the Apes, but this 1966 book is surprising for its grounding in reality The topic is the international race to land on the moon, and the first 3 4 of the book reads as barely fictionalized history in the introduction, Boulle reveals he had to change the course of the book after the assassination of President Kenndy.Of course, Boulle has to take a flyer on how the moon would actually be reached, and this is where his imagination takes th [...]

    5. I almost gave this an 80%, but I decided with my heart to give it a full. While this novel is filled with scientific know how that can make you fall asleep, its core story is engaging, fast paced, spreading over 30 years, with great characters, fictional events in a factual setting. It was beautifully written, and kept me engaged for two months while I struggled to finish.Overall, a great story with great characters, and a touching ending Good job, French dead dude
