    2. I have to admit, I was biased in favor of this book from the moment I read the title I thought it was a both a marvelous and ingenious invention calling one s novel The Book of Nonsense Having now read The Book of Nonsense, I can honestly say that my good opinion of this book was not misplaced This is one terrifically fast paced and dynamite read As a rule of thumb, I tend to read books very slowly, carefully absorbing every nuance of every word in a book But The Book of Nonsense was so gripping [...]

    11. There s a line from Nathaniel Hawthorne that reads, Words so innocent and powerless as they are, as standing in a dictionary, how potent for good and evil they become in the hands of one who knows how to combine them On its surface The Book of Nonsense is a young adult adventure story about twins who uncover and attempt to stop a centuries old plot to unravel and re form the world as we know it through the discovery and use of the Words of Power from the First Tongue, the language that is rud to [...]

    12. The Book of Nonsense by David Michael Slater is a treat for mystery lovers, magic lovers and just general book lovers Daphna and her twin Dexter are as different as twins can be Daphna loves books and volunteers reading at the local retirement home Dex skips school and doesn t want to be anywhere near a bookstore This puts Dex at odds with his father too, who finds and sells rare books. But both twins are put out by their dad s Milton latest scouting trip, which kept him away from home for six we [...]

    13. The Book of Nonsense offers a mysterious, action packed story for middle grade readers.Dexter and Daphna Wax are twins and about to turn 13 years old when they meet the unusual, and pretty creepy, Asterius Rash, a blind bookseller who only stocks books of magic When the twins father returns from a book finding tour with an old, unfamiliar text, Daphna introduces him to the bookseller The ancient text changes hands, but not in the way Daphna imagined Now her father is acting rather odd, and he s [...]

    18. In most books with twins, the siblings share a loving, amazing bond with one another Not Dexter and Daphna If anything the two hate each other Daphna loves spending her days reading, and Dex would rather do just about anything else But then their father brings home an odd book from Turkey where the words on the page appear to slither around and move Suddenly the two find themselves wrapped up in a supernatural mystery full of magic, danger, and secrets from their family s past. This book has ever [...]

    19. I enjoyed this book very much The story was compelling and the characters were interesting.A few things made reading a bit difficult The beginning was confusing and it took me a longer period to figure out who was who And the end was confusing In the final show down I didn t really understand what had happened and who or what had shown up I initially thought there was some sort of monster and not a character we ve seen before From the new emerged villain for the sequel, there must be , because I [...]

    20. Daphna and Dexter are 12 year old twins whose mother died in a tragic accident shortly after they were born Their father has carried on their mother s career of rare book dealing and travels a lot A couple of days before their 13th birthday, he comes home from a trip with yet another set of rare books Daphne goes with him to sell the first book at a new book store full of books about magic that she has been visiting all summer When her father meets the ancient bookstore owner, things begin to ge [...]

    21. I was hoping this book would be better than what it was It wasn t bad, just okay so that is why it has 2 stars This book just came out in November and it was said to have been the next Harry Potter, so I couldn t resist being one of the first ones to read it I thought the most interesting thing about the book was the fact that Dex couldn t read because the words on paper just floated and moved for him I thought the most disturbing thing about this book was the ending where one by one the older p [...]

    22. While not exactly what I expected from the name, I was pleasantly surprised with the subject matter once I started reading A young girl with a twin brother and their adventure in a bookstore full of old and exotic books Sounds like something I would have loved to find as a kid It is very well written, twists where you least expect them, and suspense from the first sentence to the last Definitely a page turner I m not sure my grands are quite old enough yet to appreciate it, but older youths and [...]

    23. I m a fan of YA urban fantasy, and while this book is skewed to a younger middle grade audience, I still was delighted to read something from a fellow Portland author particularly because it is set in local haunt Multnomah Village The writing itself felt a bit inconsistent to me, but that may have been because I was an adult reading a children s book The story, however, is full of ancient curses and religious intrigue, so it s right up my alley I have the next two volumes in the Sacred Books ser [...]

    24. If you liked Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliett, you ll like this one A bit of Harry Potter magic thrown in, too Daphna and Dexter s father collects rare books He finds one that gets into the wrong hands, and thus the magic and mystery begins What does the book contain that makes it so desirable Is the old man that now has the book a wizard, a hypnotist Who is the weird guy following them What is the danger that is to befall them on their 13th birthday which is in a matter of days.Read to solve th [...]

    25. This was a really good story The author did a great job of world building I liked the history and mythology they created It was out of this world but made believable and real I felt an emotional connection to the two protagonists Thier backstories are authentic and a little heart wrenching which only makes them alive The story is filled with twists and turns and surprising end A definite page turner.

    26. This was a fairly typical average kids discover their strengths and set out to save the world from evil book, but enjoyable and fun nonetheless There were no shocking turns, but enough twists to hold interest I liked that the twins didn t get along perfectly but learned to admit their own faults and accept the other s as well I look forward to the next books in this series, and hope the author will release one each fall as promised.

    27. I fully expected this book, marketed as a children s book , to be predictable or even boring but I have to admit to being sorely mistaken It was, in fact, somewhat predictable but importantly, it was, fast paced, often exceptionally poignant, and just overall GOOD Plus, it s always fun to read a kid s thriller and be reminded of my early days, devouring R.L Stine and Christopher Pike novels

    28. Enjoyable and exciting jr high level tale Books, magic, ancient enemies, twin protagonists who are very different from each other, and an adventure leading to life and death consequences all elements of this first entry in a series I recommend it to lovers of language and reading I hope to read the rest of the series soon.
