    1. With Memorial Day coming up, it seemed a fitting time to post my review of this book that commemorates a real event that happened during one of our often overlooked national conflicts, the War of 1812 My thanks to the good folks at Sleeping Bear Press for sending me a review copy of The Town That Fooled the British A War of 1812 Story by Lisa Papp, illustrated by Robert Papp, which tells a slightly fictionalized by truly fascinating story of how the town of St Michaels, Maryland, avoided obliter [...]

    2. Fantastic Illustrations coupled with the history lesson through personal story made for a great book I would love to have this book in my personal library.

    3. It s August on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in a town called St Michaels The British are waging war against the Americans and finding their mighty Navy challenged by the powerful American ships St Michael s is one of the towns where the skilled citizens are building these ships and the British have set their sites on the little town, determined to destroy it.On this day a young boy named Henry watches his father don his uniform and pick up his musket and gunpowder Father is off to do battle lea [...]

    4. Another great picture book for older children like me This is a small fictional look at the War of 1812 and how a young boy saved his town of St Michaels, Maryland The author illustrator husband and wife team did a great job with both text and illustrations to portray the story of an attack by the British on a small town known for its shipbuilding, and of how one good idea saved the town The last line of the book says, sometimes it doesn t take a giant to defeat one Good tale of courage, bravery [...]

    5. I ve been wondering why books haven t been written about the War of 1812, and this one satisfies this gap in books I can read to my fifth graders for our U.S history studies It has suspense, family, war, and provides a small picture of life in the early 1800 s in this historical town Dark illustrations highlight the boy in his white shirt, as if representing the good that will outshine, and outthink, the enemy

    6. The book was a good small version of an American hero I liked ths story of how one brave boy managed to protect his town by using lanterns against the British As a future soldier, the book showed me hope of how even the biggest enemy can be brought down by one small idea.

    7. Perfect combination of great illustrations and brief, engaging text The story grabs the reader and presents a part of history that is not well known.

    8. Pretty accurate historical facts A nice coming of age story where young Henry feels compelled to help and make a difference used for historical fiction genre clinic

    9. Really well done story about how a town called St Michael s, MD was able to trick the British into shooting their cannons at the lanterns they placed in trees, which avoided destruction of their town It was a key port because they were excellent ship builders It made me want to visit the town Beautiful, realistic illustrations Highly recommended for upper grades, especially for resources on the War of 1812.

    10. Beautiful illustrations, great story for kidsBUT I kept thinking that the emotions of this child could easily be updated and transplanted to children currently living in Afghanistan and elsewhere When is that picture book going to be written.

    11. Historical Fiction picture book Interesting story that made me think about the war of 1812 Good visuals and language was okay.
